The young woman walked into the barn, her tall, black, leather boots shining in the squares of light cast from the skylights in the hay loft. But when she gazed upon the rampage being caused, her smile quickly faded into a face of pain and disaster.
"No!! Amber, what are you doing??"
she shouted, and ran to the rearing palomino. She had gotten out; go figure! As Anne came to the clearly frightened mare, Amber wanted nothing to do with Anne and ran out of the otherside of the barn.
"Amber!"
she screamed, now sad and terrifed. She had to think fast. Well, she had ridden Ego bareback before, and he did have a crush on the palomino Arab. That was her only chance. She strapped on her helmet as the mare bolted out of the door. Swinging open the stall door she kicked the black gelding on, as he already started a steady gallop through the barn. The palomino was in sight, but just barely.
"C' mon Ego!
she shouted over the pounding of hooves and the rush of the near water. The gelding, who was never meant for speed, slowly inched his way onto the mare who was nearing the river. Anne knew she hated water, so this was good. She saw Amber rear at the water, and finaly just walk in circles, not knowing where to go. The twenty-three year old eased the horse's pace, and jumped off. Happily he trotted off, and Anne was worried until she saw him go into his open stall. Keeping her eyes on the sweaty horse, she stepped backwards slowly until she reached the extra rope halter that always hung on the hitching post outside. Then she swiftly made her way back to Amber.
"Let's go now, Ammie,"
she spoke calmly, and took her back to her stall. It seemed she had undid the bolt, of which she thought to be secure. Putting the golden mare in her stall with some water, she went to the tack room and got one of the 3 extra stall-guards and fastened it to Amber's stall. That should be good, Anne thought, then went back to Ego's stall. Peering in, she saw he was calmly laying on the cushy floor. Who wouldn't after a hard run?
"Good boy, thanks,"
she said, and left a sugar cube or two by his head for him to find when he wanted. She decided that was enough of a workout for those two, but she probably should ride Bambi and Josie.
"Bambi!"
she called, and the brown head poked out of the stall. Smiling she took her to the cross-ties and started to groom her. The mare didn't need much, and she finished it up quickly with a pick of her hooves. Come to think of it, she would've been better to ride. But Ego was the closest... Anne took the saddle seat saddle and placed it on her back. The bay mare side-stepped for a moment, then held still.
"That's what I thought,"
the woman said with a soft scoff. Then she placed the double-bridle onto the finely chiseled head, and grabbed her long dressage whip and helmet. Then she led the mare to the riding ring.
